Personal Blog#3: Sleepless in a City of Loneliness

It has been a bit more than seven hours and fifteen days since I moved here.  Today, I want to be a bit more sentimental, putting together some thoughts.

I got nice classmates — working professionals in suits, with Mac in their brown bags.  I met nice international students — people looking for the American Dream, with Hoya folders with Jack‘s portrait in their backpacks.  It is been so informative time for me.  Whenever I go out with my new friends, women talk about men, men talk about women.  I listen and I think: how random this city is.

Random city with random professional with big ambitions.  Even if I love Washington, D.C., I found out that it is so hard for people to build relationships here.  They go out, random talk on a random bar over the cocktail, random phone calls, random nights… and everyone clearly understands how random all this is.  John T Cacioppo, a neuroscientist who has been studying human isolation and connection for three decades, recently revealed that 20% of the population feels unhappily isolated at any given time despite all the friends and fans they may have amassed on Facebook and other social networking sites.  I watch people in a metro and wonder why am I wearing headphones all the time, staring at eReader, avoiding the eye-contacts and disturbingly honestly, I do not mind it.

On this mood, I took some time to look at Steve McCurry’s blog.  He has a great talent of talking about human values that we sometimes prefer to ignore.  And on this mood, I am showing you my random photographs with random quotes about loneliness.

One may have a blazing hearth in one’s soul, and yet no one ever comes to sit by it. – Vincent Van Gogh

  1. this is sooooo .. impressive! how often we don’t think deeper about the values and feelings… and u could not only express it, but give an analysis, supported by valuable data and artistic pictures. perfect combitation of universal journalism! thank you!!! ))
